RTPCR Laboratories are set up at Kalamassery Medical College to facilitate Covid 19 testing. The real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction assay system, which is available in two and a half hours, was implemented by the district administration and the Kalamassery Medical College authorities.
The lab can test about 180 samples per day. There are two PCR kits set up in the medical college. The cost of setting up the lab so far is one crore crores. The lab is in charge of doctors who have undergone specialised training during Nipah. With the approval of the ICMR, the virus can be tested in various laboratories.
BioSafety Cabinets have been sanctioned at a cost of Rs 27.57 lakh from PT Thomas MP’s Regional Development Fund and Rs 36 lakh from Hibi Eden MP’s Local Development Fund. According to the District Collector, S. Suhas, a special vehicle was arranged to ship from the district to the medical college.
